For example American Cherry is 950 lbs, the higher the lbs value the harder the wood, so American Walnut is 1010lbs, Canadian Breza has a value of 1200lbs, Yellow Birch, 1260lbs, Red Oak, 1290lbs, American Beech, 1300lbs, White Ash, 1320lbs, Hard Maple is 1450lbs, Sapele is1500lbs, Tigerwood is 2160lbs, Cabreuva (Santos Mahogany) is 2200lbs and both Brazilian Cherry and Koubari are 2300lbs.
All of these wood strengths are measured with Red Oak being the comparison reference for hardness, using the Janka hardness test. This requires the use of a 0.444 inch steel ball, and the force required to embed it into a specific species of wood.
Hardwood flooring is about a good deal more than simply natural good looks, although this does play a major role in making a flooring choice. Performance and quality plays a major factoring role. It is the way the wood is treated when it is manufactured, and the care given when it is dried and finished which counts.
Kilns are used on-site, to dry the wood and all processes from log to finished product are followed to exacting standards. Before any flooring is manufactured it is quality control tested for moisture content to prevent problems showing up after installations. Storage facilities also control moisture content, to keep it at the correct levels.
